Shopify's founder-archetype research
Shopify studied thousands of merchants starting businesses on its platform and published research on the distinct types of founders that emerge, and more usefully on how each type tends to succeed and fail. The details vary by report, but the recurring insight is stable: there is no single 'entrepreneur personality'.
Different founders win in different ways. Some are operators who win with process and numbers. Some are connectors who win through relationships and distribution. Some are builders who win by shipping things people want. Some are patient bootstrappers who win by staying small and compounding quietly.
The mistake is copying a playbook built for a different type. A connector forcing themselves to run an ads-optimised faceless store, or an analytical operator trying to become a charismatic personal brand, is fighting their own grain and usually quits.
